General notes:
The original Macclesfield Canal swivel bridge was replaced in the 1960's or 1970's with a new manually operated swing bridge. This bridge had a reputation for being difficult to stop once it had started to swing, a situation that tragically resulted in the death of a child.

The bridge was then replaced with the current electically operated bridge. This bridge, which includes traffic safety barriers, can be operated only with a key provided by British Waterways.
