General notes:
A local resident that I spoke to could vaguely remember the original swing bridge, which he thought was replaced by the modern bascule bridge about 20 years ago.

These modern structures are much more obtrusive in the rural landscape than the original swing bridges were.

John Powell reports that although the bridge carries an unclassified road linking Barnby Dun and Bentley the bridge also provides the only access for heavy loads to the nearby Thorpe Marsh power station, so the bridge was designed to carry abnormal loads of up to 180 tons gross weight.

The tendered cost of the bridge was 513,345. 36p.

An elevated control house was built for the sole use of BW operational staff, but in recent years a freestanding low level standard control console has been built for the use of boaters when the bridge is not under BW control.

Sykehouse Lift Bridge has been built to the same technical specifications.
