General notes:
The current bridge is a modern steel structure, with full electrical controls and drive mechanism.

While Chris was photographing Kirk Lane bridge he noticed that Sykehouse bridge was being opened - but it was a bit too far to get along the towpath in time to photgraph it - even on his bike!

The record book of the New Junction Canal (inspected in Waterways Trust Archive, Gloucester - archive ref 93/386) notes that A. Robbins visited the works of J. Butler & Co on 20/08/1902 to inspect patterns for frames, roller paths, centre pivot and pintle for the original swing bridges. He visited the works again on 12/11/02 to inspect progress on the swing bridge for Kirk Lane. Robbins reported that the short arm of the bridge was 23' 11 7/8" and the long arm 48' 5", giving a total of 73' 1 7/8" instead of 73' 1 3/4 " - 1/8" too long!

John Powell reports that the new swing bridge was constructed in 1977 by Wellmen Brothers Contractor and designed and supervised by Husband & Company Consulting Engineers. The Tender Sum was 97,499.00.

It comprises two main longitudinal steel plate girders with steel transverse beams and a decking of longitudinal aluminium planks coated with an epoxy resin anti-skid surfacing. The bridge is powered by an electro-hydraulic system to operate the wedging and slewing mechanisms on an automatic basis. The bridge was originally fitted with manual swing arm barriers but these have been replaced with fully automatic drop-arm road barriers and wig-wag road signals.

The bridges were originally under the sole control of a resident bridge keeper but subsequently a standard contol console has been built so that the bridge can be operated by the boater.
